Smart relays

Relay settings

The Instellingen relais (relay settings) page with the OFF/ON/AUTO switches.

Smart relays let the system automatically switch an appliance on and off — for example a boiler, heat pump or pool pump — at the moments it's advantageous to run it. You manage them on the Instellingen relais ("Relay settings") page, under Relais.

Configuring a relay

For each relay you can set:

SettingWhat it does
Status: OFF / ON / AUTOOFF = always off. ON = always on (manual). AUTO = the system decides for itself, based on surplus and/or battery level.
Tonen op dashboard ("Show on dashboard")Show this relay as a widget on your dashboard.
LabelThe name you give the relay yourself (the field's placeholder reads "Voer een label in" — "Enter a label") — e.g. "Boiler" or "Heat pump". There's no fixed list of appliances: you type in whatever is connected.
Vermogen ("Power", W)The appliance's power rating. Used to estimate your savings when the relay isn't separately metered.
Minimaal batterijniveau (goedkope uren) ("Minimum battery level, cheap hours")See below.
tip

Set Status to AUTO so the system decides for itself when the appliance may run — on surplus or during cheap hours.

Minimum battery level (cheap hours)

This setting determines the battery level from which the relay may switch on during cheap hours. The portal's help text, verbatim:

Relais schakelt pas in tijdens goedkope uren wanneer de batterij dit niveau bereikt heeft. Heeft geen effect bij PV-overschot.

("The relay only switches on during cheap hours once the battery has reached this level. Has no effect during PV surplus.")

In other words: this protects your battery reserve from charging an appliance with expensive grid power during cheap hours. As soon as there's PV surplus, this threshold doesn't apply — the relay can then always run on the surplus.

There are three presets:

PresetLevel
Geen beperking ("No restriction")0%
Batterij half vol (50%) ("Battery half full")50%
Batterij bijna vol (85%) ("Battery almost full")85%
warning

Too high a threshold means the relay rarely or never switches on during cheap hours. Too low a threshold may draw down the battery you wanted to keep for the evening.
